At that gestation, usually the DON'T need to be in the NICU. If their lungs are developed, usually the only other thing that can keep them in is their sucking. My daughter was a 33.3weeker, I know that's a little younger than your asking for, she weighed 3lb. 7.4oz. and the only reason she spent 3 weeks in NICU was due to poor sucking. After she got the hang of that she was able to come home. My hubby's neice had a baby at 35 weeks and her baby weighed 6lbs.2oz, and went home with her mom. Good Luck!

I had Thomas at 35 weeks exactly and he came out perfectly healthy. He weighed 5lbs 8 oz and was put in NICU from 2am (when he was born) until 10 am that same morning for observation. He was breathing fine and active so they moved him into the regular newborn nursery at 10am and he stayed there until I was discharged 2 days later. They did put in a feeding tube as precaution so they could monitor his breathing to make sure he was doing that fine on his own but the tube was removed the day I was discharged (2 days after birth) but they gave him bottles while the tube was in. He was moved to the children's wing for more observation and to make sure he would take the bottle ok. He was discharged 2 days later and has gained almost 4 pounds since then and he is only 6 weeks old!!!
They say that 35 week babies are right on the bubble and can go either way. Obviously each baby is different and I wish you luck with your new bundle of joy!!!

I just had my baby at 35 weeks exactly. He was delivered by C-section due to preeclampsia. He's on the small side at 4 lbs, 1 oz. He's been in the NICU for five days now and I expect he'll be in there at least another week -- but he's in no real danger. He can breathe on his own just fine, but he's not quite got the stamina to eat, so he's on a feeding tube. Good luck with your own pregnancy and delivery, and I sure hope you don't need the NICU again -- the nurses have been great, but it's not an experience I would wish on anyone!

I am a proud mother of twin girls who were born at 37 weeks and did not spend one second in the NICU. Hannah weighed 5lbs,14oz and Lilly weighed 4lbs, 10oz. They were perfectly healthy when they were first born, and actually have been in better health then other babies born around the same time that weighed more! Good luck, but I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

My first son was born between 35-36 weeks and he did not have to go into the NICU, his breathing at first was a little labored (95% instead of 100%) but he weighed 6lb 8oz so I really would not worry to much, call your gyno, they may want you to be monitored and they also may try to slow down your labor!

I'm not sure about 35 weeks, but at my last Dr. appointment I asked how early was too early for labor and she said that she had a lot of patients go into labor at 36 weeks and they did not stop it, so I don't know if 35 weeks is the boundary line, but i think you should be fine. they may keep it for a couple days to make sure the lungs are fully developed, but it all depends on how well your baby has developed so far.

As long as the baby weighs at least 5 pounds and has no obvious health problems, they will allow him to go home. The biggest problem that premature babies have is that their heart hasn't finished forming. It's not always serious, even term babies sometimes have to take a few extra days for their heart to finish forming (My daughter was right on time and was born with a murmur).
It's a roll of the dice. Try to take it easy and keep your stress low so that you can postpone labor as long as possible. See your doctor to make certain that your mucus plug is still in place and you are not leaking amniotic fluid.
I have two children. My first weighed 8 lbs 1 oz and my second was 8-3.

At my midwives office, a woman came in with a very tiny baby. I was two weeks away from delivering and asked her how old he was, to which she replied "two weeks but born at 35 weeks gestation". I asked her if she had to stay in the NICU, and she said no, because he was doing so well and was over five pounds so they sent them home after a week.

I have 3 kids and the last 2 both came at 37 weeks and they were both fine and 1 weighed 6lbs & 4 oz the other was 6lbs & 10oz. If you are really having signs you are going to go into labor then you should call your doctor or the hospital and ask to speak to the doctor on call in the maternity ward.
