OMG call your doctor's office again and don't bother talking to the receptionist about it at all. Immediately ask to speak to the nurse or doctor.
Bleeding for that lenght of time is NOT normal and it is NOT NOTHING. I am an OB/GYN ultrasound technician. Minimally, you should:
1. take a pregnancy test
2. if negative, get a pelvic ultrasound exam
3. possibly have an endometrial biopsy
Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be an important symptom of a serious problem. Sure, it can be just a hormonal issue, such as an anovulatory period that your body will eventually recover from. But the receptionist was WAY out of line and you should also tell the doctor about her also. It is not her job nor is she qualified to do so.
Good luck. Call them first thing next week. Unless you feel you are currently hemorrhaging, you DO NOT need to go to the emergency room.

First thing, I'd be pretty angry if a receptionist told me not to worry and not to bother making an appointment.
Secondly, I would make an appointment if I had my period for three weeks straight, not to mention that you are probably have or going to get anemia. You may want to speak with your doctor about iron supplements if your period doesn't stop soon.
Causes: anything ranging from something as serious as an STD to something simple like stress. Only a doctor can tell you.
Thirdly, don't ever let someone tell you not to see a doctor when you feel like you need to. This is your body, and only you can tell when something is wrong enough to go see a doctor. If you're worried about something, and it's enough to think about seeing a doctor about it, go make that appointment.

Call your Dr. and make an apt. and while you are seeing the Dr. make sure to tell him/her that the receptionist in the office fells like it's her responsibility to give out medical advice!!! I was just watching a program on TV the other day about excessive bleeding while on your period and it sounds like you should really be looked at. They mentioned a few things that could cause it, some were life threatening others not, but better to be safe than sorry. Good luck

my bestfriend had the problem of having her period for about a month with a heavy flow and had a lot of pain. She went to the gyno, and they told her she had polysistic ovarian syndrom, (cysts on her ovaries) causing the eggs do be bad. She was put onto birthcontrol to help regulate her period and shes doing better until recently she had this problem of random bleeding, and it wasnt her time of the month, and she went back and told her that it had worstened. Usually with this disease you cannot have kids due to the defect if the eggs. But actually her sister who has the same problem, is now pregnat, so it can happen. Also people get hyterectamys (sorry for the spelling). I hope all is alright and that you find out your answers. Make an appt with your dr first, then they will get you with a gyno. Good luck.

If you are bleeding excessively, you need to see the doctor. Receptionists are great diversionary tacticians for busy doctors. You could even be showing early signs of cervical/ovarian cancer if you've been bleeding for 3 weeks. Go there in person and make an appointment, or better yet, go to the hospital. I'm not trying to scare you, but better safe than sorry.

You should definitely see a doctor. That receptionist just hates her job and is in no way qualified to suggest that losing blood for three weeks is nothing. Depending on the amount of fluid it could be a sign of endometriosis or std or pregnancy or it could be nothing. Only an exam will be able to tell.

I'm afraid I don't know what's causing it... but that certainly sounds weird. Especially since your period's been so normal before. Don't pay attention to the receptionist; make an appointment with your doctor. If nothing else, you'll get some more information and be able to relax.

I would ignore the receptionist and insist on seeing a doctor. It is not normal to bleed for three weeks straight. If she tries to argue with you remind her that she isn't the doctor and to be quiet and make the appointment. Or go to the local emergency room and get checked out.

Call your doctor back or go to the emergency room. Something could very well be wrong. Sounds to me like that receptionist was just lazy. Go get it checked! That is not normal.

Ok, are you on any pills? If you are, this might be a side effect. Have you skipped a few period prior to this? This doesnt seem very normal but sometime, stress or subconscious tension might cause this to happen. My friend had her period for 2 month straight until she went to a therapist. Hope this helps.
