It varies from every single department, but it's really very low. The benefits are excellent, however, and you can retire after 20 years. It's easy to get a 2nd profession with such a young retirement age. Also, most officers have an opportunity for a lot of overtime. The highest paid people in my city's police dept were 2 "street" cops with a lot of overtime. Each made a little over $100,000 +, I think.

amen not enough in my mind police should have same tax benifits as active dutie military in combat and all should be paid more the are in just as much a war as those brave souls in iraq

Depends on the area. In my Metro area, starting is about $30,000 a year average.

I think the avg. starting salary is in the $30,000's... try looking on salary.com, it tells you the salary range of various professions in your area.

In Los Angeles it is +55,000.I don't know whether it is with or without a degree.
