Renting is less of a problem than zoning laws. You need to do a google search for owning farm animals in your part of Cali.
If it is legal, then ask your landlord. He/she will let you know real fast.
Good luck!
P.S. I love chickens and I hope you can raise them!

I doubt you have enough room. Chickens need to roam around and scratch for food during the day. At night they must be put in a warm dry protective coop with a house and roosting places and nesting boxes for the hens. The poop everywhere and I do mean everywhere! So if you don't want it around your house and you don't have a big yard I feel sorry for you. I would estimate you need about 1 acre or 1 acre and a half. You will also make sure it is legal to raise chickens in your area and if you live close to anyone make sure they don't care. Chickens, at least some, fly so you will either have to clip the flight feathers on their wings ever so often or have a big area as I mentioned before. You will have to keep the nesting and housing places filled with fresh straw or hay and clean their areas so disease will not kill your flock. Also you want maybe 1 male to every 3-4 females. You really cannot have more than that or the males will "Overtake" the females at breeding times and will and can seriously hurt them with their spurs and other things. This is a pretty big commitment and you seriouly need to make sure you have abosolutly enough space and law for raising them. A great yahoo board for info is:

I don't think it is against the law. Is there anything in your lease about animals? I have rented out my home and had in the lease no pets allowed except small dog. Also do you live in town? There may be an ordinance prohibiting chickens. If you live in the country and nothing in your lease about animals I would say go for it.

talk to your landlord and read your lease. Exactly how many is some chickens, 2 or 100? I'm sure it also depends on the amount of chickens. Some is pretty vague.

You should get ahold of your local police station, they should be able to tell you the laws. In most cases they would probably tell you know, because chickens can be quite loud and disturb the neighbors. But oddly enough, in Scottsbluff NE you can have 3 ducks (domestic) inside your apartment (actually inside the building), but if you go to the twin city of Gering (they are attached cities and intertwined) you can have no ducks (unless the ducks were a gift)....STRANGE STRANGE STRANGE!

I've never known any Renters but I knew some Smiths that had chickens. I suppose anyone could raise them. It doesn't matter what their name is.

You will have to read your lease agreement to see if they allow pets. You can also contact the landlord or agent managing the property and ask them. It is different for every rental.
