Macros are mini-programs that are embedded into a document, such as an Excel spreadsheet, Access database, or Word document. They can also be written in a language called "Visual BASIC for Applications". BASIC stands for "Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instructions Code", and is a language that is commonly used in "Introduction to computer programming" classes. The code written into a macro can be harmful if the origrammer who wrote them knows how to write that kind of code and has the intent to do harm to a person's computer.

Macros are small programs that can be embedded in Excel worksheets or Word documents to automate procedures in the document. They were one of the first ways that people began spreading viruses - by hiding them in documents. So the programs were given the ability to disable the macros to prevent the spread of viruses.

are you referring to Microsoft Excel? if so, then a macro is a set of instructions used to automate certain tasks in a workbook... like if you wanted to be prompted to enter a value in a certain cell, then move to another cell, stuff like that. if there's a reason for disabling them, it'd be if they were in a workbook that you hadn't seen before... you'd want to see what they were designed to do before enabling them.
