I am already thinking about how I am going to live on my own. I am graduating high school June of 2008 and I will be living on my own for a while or until I decide if I want a roommate. I need to know everything about living on my own including bills, schooling, jobs, etc., keeping in mind I want to move to New York around the Soho area

I need a VERY detailed list about bills like grocery, rentals insurance, car insurance, health insurance, electricity, water, etc. I also need a VERY detailed list of furniture and appliances.

I want to be a makeup artist and I know some places I can apply for a job but I do not know how I should write resume. I have never had a job and I want to work at a MAC store or counter. I will have some experience in makeup artistry as soon as I start school.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any websites for starting out will be great as well. You can also email me if you have even more stuff to say.

Thanks a bunch!

You should definitely think about having a planned roomie before heading for the big city. It's hard moving to a new city on your own- but especially to NY. Another plus to having a roomie is that when money does get tight- you might be able to help each other out. Think small at first- get a real small place with low rent and a short lease (6 mo or so). If you decide it's too much to handle- you will have another option. If you are hanging in there you can get a nicer place later. NY is tough- and expensive- but if you want it you can do it. Don't give up if it's really your dream.

You need to count on spending no less than $1000 a month in rent- and that is just your portion. I would say no less than $250 for utilities- you have to think of things like cable, phone, cell phone, internet when you think utitilies.

Don't forget to add in entertainment costs too. Girls don't think about what they spend a month just in a new t-shirt, a pair of jeans, shoes, make-up, perfume. Create a strict budget and stick to it the best you can.

Groceries- if you are a smart shopper you can get by on about $150 a month.

You are going to need basic household supplies. Walk through your parents house room by room and take a look at what they have. Sure, they are going to have a lot of "extras" but it'll give you an idea.

Finally, the MAC counter. I understand the draw to a young girl about working for MAC as a beautician, however, being realistic, you should probabably have a back up plan such as working as a MAC girl AND something else (like bartending or waitressing in NY is always easy money).

Good luck hon!

Well hello there,so you will be finished high school in 2008 and want to move away from your parents. I hope that by that time you are 18 and can make that decision.

Here are a few things to consider when making plans. Listen to those that have gone through what you want to go through. You don't have to take their advise, but you should listen.

Then there is another person that you should listen to also. there, is little voice that speak to you when you are about to make a major decision. Talk to your parents especially, they are the ones that love you the most.

Getting a job and moving out on your own might appear to be the most important thing at present.

You should give thought to attending college. College grads in any career field are more desirable than high school grads. You will then have something to write on that resume. You will have more than enough time after college. College will offer some of the courses you will need to become a make-up artist.

You see it is not enough to just know about groceries, rent and placing a sofa in your living room.

There are rental contracts, Federal and State income taxes, car insurance and liabilities that go with it.

Now you should make up your mind as what is best for you,but you should think in long terms instead of just short term solutions. Some things are better done now as oppose o realizing later that a mistake was made an now you have to correct that mistake.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Oh sweetie. I don't know where you live now, but there is no way you will be able to afford The Bronx, let alone Soho by yourself. Especially as a counter girl for a cosmetics company.

Go to the New York Times www.newyorktimes.com and search their classifieds. Search for both apartments and the jobs you think you can get.

You would be much better off getting your degree close to home, then move away to the big city after you land your dream job.

Good luck to you.

I was out the door right after high school graduation and landed in NYC 2 years later. NYC is soooooooo expensive! You need to make $3000.00 per month to get by. There are many dreamers in NYC, they work very hard, but it's not all that easy. I was a student at Hunter College and luckily I got a dorm in Manhattan for $250.00 rent per month and I was still a starving student.

What you need to do is save your money before you go.

Your choice for a new home is about the most expensive in the world. So you have to earn lots of money. A place to start to gather information may be the local Chamber of Commerce who have a lot of the stats you are looking for. Do a google on either www.local.com or chamber of commerce.
