Norm is right...There is nothing in a water heater that is going to be effected by a trip on it side... As for the guys at the store... I had a client this week that said the guys from Lowe's told her that the fridge could not be lowered to fit in their cabinets. She was told her 2 options were to return the fridge, or trim the cabinets... With my handy dandy screwdriver I was able to lower the fridge so that it would fit in the space provided... That is all I have to say about that...

Just an add to those who stated that laying a water heater down for transport is fine. In 30+ years of contracting, I've never heard anyone state that it would damage a water heater. Sounds like you bought the water heater at a large store like Lowes or Home Depot. Those guys/gals are hit and miss on plumbing fixture knowledge. If you're still worried, call a plumbing supply house that the plumbing contractors use. They'll confirm what we've said to be true. Good luck!

As others have said there is no problem with laying a water heater on it's side for transit and completely ridiculous for the need to allow it to remain upright for any period of time before installing. It is an empty tank for goodness sake.

It's fine. Not recommended with a refrigerator, but no problem with a hot water heater.

That is true of a refrigerator because the oil needs to run back into the compressor but it isn't true of a water heater.
You can leave it on its side as long as you want without worry.

I didn't see anything in manuals about that. I think they may be confusing a refrigerator with your water heater.
Be sure to read your manual anyway.

That's fine. It won't hurt nothing. My hubby is an expert at this stuff and he said it was okay.
