Ive never really listened to Tom Jones much (and therefore did not like him)

But Today I listened to some of his songs and indeed he is a very good singer.

I particulary enjoyed " Whats new Pussycat" and especially the chorus, I think it has a large wind instrument playing , possibley a Baritone (Does anybody know what it is?)

Did Jones have a large fan base and what other really good songs of his should i listen to?

When Tom was young he was very good looking and add to that his golden Welsh voice, of course he has a large fan base! The girls screamed at him where ever he went, the poor man used to have knickers thrown at him on stage! Yes he was a big, big star. I think he lives in America. He sings Its` not unusual, Jezebel Green green grass of home. The list is endless. He has been recording nearly 40 years.

I liked to listen to Tom Jones and yes, he had a big following. The females used to throw their underwear at him on stage.
Do a search and you can find a lot of his songs. I can't think of any right now, except the one you mentioned "What's new pussycat."

It's not unusual to feel the way you do. Tom Jones was very popular with the ladies in the 60's & 70"s most of his songs are pretty good to listen to.
