i was watching clerks two one day and the black couple got offended because he said the word porch monkey. i'm african american myself but i didn't know that term was a racial slur. i thought it meant someone who was lazy or just sits on thier porch most of time. i think it's stupid, that term shouldn't even be in the category for offensive words. i think people pay too much attention to these words and give them power and why is it referred to just black people? sooner or later we cant say anything without someone getting angry and wanting to fight. just like the n word, i don't like that word myself but i don't get all crazy and want to beat somebody up just because they say it. i'm not just talking about black people but all ethnicities because i'm quite sure every race has a racial slur. dont let the word control you, you control the word. (that last part sounded kind of lame but i had to find a way to end it)

The moment any one is offended - we now live in the land of the politically correct.
Any phrase can be offensive or a slur in today's arena.

Amen to that. That is quite possibly one of the more intelligent topics I have seen on this site to date.

That being said, it has been a derogatory name for long before I was born. Although words are just words, when a person uses them in a slanderous way, it is usually pretty obvious.

I can understand the couple being upset, if it was obvious that the clerk was using the term in a slanderous way (I can't imagine a situation where someone would not say that with the intention of offending), especially if the couple was old enough to live through the civil rights protests, and the years following.

It really is ironic that the derogatory use of the slur 'monkey' is traditionally intended for ******* races, 'sand monkey' is commonly used to slur middle eastern races... Really does speak to the general intelligence of Indians that openly use a racial slur mean for them towards other countries and people.

It is a racial slur, meant to demean and ostracize. Now that you know this word is a racial slur don't laugh at it, to the person who says it and anyone who is listening it says you agree. Accepting the use of the word is when you give it power.

sorry--- I never heard the term. but I agree--- words should not have the effect have. On the other hand, I as a "pink' person (actually--- I'm kind of tan; definitely not white) would NEVER use the "n" word because white people in the past did such horrid things and always referred to 'black' people that way.
The problem is not the words--- but the feelings they convey. If the words are used hatefully, no matter what word you use, it is wrong...
People are all one race, after all--- the human race.

I am white and I was always told it was racist by blacks. I guess some black folk witness other black folk sittin' around on the porch a lot and are self-conscious about it, so they think white people mean it as a slur and it developed into one.

Since when did porch monkey become a racial slur? THE VERY SECOND IT WAS SAID! I'm white and I find it disgusting.
