i think cats are pretty low maintenance, feed them twice a day, play with them with a feather or piece of string for a while everyday, leave water and some dry kibble down for them when you are gone for the day and they nibble when they want.
plus i have the advantage of lap-time when i sit to read, T'Pring is usually in my lap, and i must say that is very comforting.

Had two white's tree frogs. Dumped in a bag of about 20 or so crickets in a week(inexpensive, too!), refilled the water in their terrarium(they had a little pool), and cleaned the terrarium bout once a month. They don't even need attention. Pretty much sleep all the time, but it is cool to watch them jump and eat the crickets. And they were cute!

I think a small dog is pretty easy, we have a toy poodle. All you have to do is make sure they have food and water and they are good. Maybe a haircut once every 2-3 months. A shower whenever they start to get kinda sticky and messy. Usually once every 2 months or so.

My leopard geckoes, personally. They sit in their cage, you make sure their water bowls are full, toss in a half-dozen crickets every other day, turn their heat lamps on and off, and occasionally clean the cage. Easy as pie.
