clover is a good choice. it's low maintenance and i read somewhere that it kills weeds. and it blooms on season too

They do have lawn grass alternatives now using different kinds of fescues. These are short grasses that need little or no mowing. I have also seen ppl put down the black gardeners cloth and cover it with nice small river type rocks......add a shrub or two or even a couple of HUGE rocks and it looks really nice. Type something in like lawn alternatives for further information.

In Australia, mints have been used instead of grass. Or you could turn your yard into a cottage garden: I read an item a month or so ago that mentions that lawns are actually fairly recent inventions, except for lords who want to see their enemies coming from far away. Everyone else had gardens with kitchen herbs and vegetables.

There are:

Decorative gravels and stones.
Wood chips.
White clover.
Vines and ground covers like myrtle, pachysandra, ivy, etc.
And of course there is also moss which is as hard to grow as grass.
