There are many ways to help keep it secure however there is no 100% way to fully protect it. Hopefully, I can help you secure it to an extent.
An anti virus is mandatory for a computer's survival. Try AVG from http://www.free.grisoft.com or Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky the leading vendor in anti virus software available at http/://www.activevirusshield.com . Don't get both because they can cause your computer to crash.
At least 3 antispyware applications are also necessary. Try Ad-Aware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.com , Spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org and Microsoft Windows Defender from http://www.windowsdefender.com .
A good firewall is also necessary. I recommend ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com or Sunbelt Kerio from http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm . Remember to use only one firewall.
A PC- optimization tool is also a great idea. Try CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com
Mozilla Firefox, an alternative browser to Internet Explorer, is also a great addition. It is much more secure than Internet Explorer yet works the same way. http://www.mozilla.com
Remember to use different passwords to different websites and to add a password to your account when you log on to your computer. If you have any more questions please email me.

Well make sure you have both anti-virus and anti-spyware protection aswell as a active firewall to protect your O.S. and other software. As far as protecting you on the hardware end just be careful not to drop it.

There are lots of good answers above mine so in order not to be redundant my suggestion is to use the fire fox web browser from mozilla. Since I have been using it my anti-spyware program has only detected one or two tracking cookies and nothing major in the way of evil programs. good luck.

Well if your laptop has windows XP, you can set a log in password to protect your data. My compter has two logins, one for everyone else and one for me.
Hardware wise, you don't leave your laptop where it can be stolen.
