help me to get a flat stomach? I'm not fat and have a lot of confidence, but would just like a smaller stomach.

Sit ups will strengthen your abdominal muscles, but won't directly flatten your stomach.

Everyone has a six-pack, it's just hidden in many people beneath the layer of fat that lies above their abs.

The sit-ups will help some, but In order to really get a flat stomach, you need to work out more, as in cardio exercise. There's no way to specifically pinpoint parts of the body where you want to lose fat. You just have to lose it all over.

I'd suggest running, swimming, biking, dancing or some other cardio-intensive sport. There are machines at gyms (ellipticals and crosstrainers) that will specificially work as cardio exercise without putting strain on your joints.

But in the meantime, to situps. They can't hurt, after all. Sit-ups, crunches, leg-lifts, and other exercises all target different sections of the abdominal muscles, so mix it up to get the maximum benefit from your workout.

I've added a wikipedia article that addresses the reason you won't flatten your stomach just from crunches, and it also has links to specific abdominal exercises.

Good luck!

doing sit-ups, or ab exercises of any kind, will make your stomach muscles stronger, more developed and toner. It will not 'shrink' your belly nor remove any excess fat that is on top of those muscles.

Crunches are better than situps.
