I've begun writing a novel about a young woman and a young man who are to have a relationship through the correspondence of letters- letters by mail that is, NOT email. They are from different countries, so my question is, how should the letter writing begin? Not the content of the letters, I have that figured out, but how should the whole thing begin without them actually coming face to face before the letter writing starts? I have no idea how to do this..any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

there are several possibilities.
you could have it start out with her trying to find a pen-pal and that's how it starts.
another idea would be to have one of them be a solider overseas (and if you really wanted to be orginial it could be the woman) during a conflict. they have an organization called adopt-a-platoon. he could write a letter to the platoon as a whole and the woman decides to write him back

How about one of them writes a letter and sends it to the address of an old family home the other visited when he/she was small. They wrote just to see if the house was still there and sends along a photo of what the house looked like 20 years ago.

How about the girl finds a pen pal on some site or whatever, then the letter gets lost or stolen and it falls into the hands of this guy, he either recieves it in the mail or finds it on the street.

Well, one person could see the other written about in/or have written a magazine article or something like that and write them a letter. I am not sure if that would go with your story or not.

Well they could have joined a pen pal group. Or it could be an assignment
