Next month i will have to book in for the x ray. My partner will be there for me but i am so scared. Most people say it hurts especially when they inject the dye. Can i ask to be put on the local anaesthetic? or wil they not allow it. Because i dont think i can handle that kind of pain right now.

I'm sure the policy varies from place to place, but where I am we don't give you medication. The patients are told to take a pain reliever before hand in case of cramping, and that's usually all there is - some slight cramping. Don't go into it all worked up...just relax and breath slowly. It's basically like a pap smear.

I've never heard of anyone being put under during it but I think it is a legitimate question. I've heard it is painful also. I'm an ultrasound technician and I've assisted in a similar procedure called a Sonohysterogram. Depending on the condition of the fallopian tubes, it can be painful also, if performed to asses tubal patency. I know we would never use an anaesthetic for our procedure, but maybe the hysterosalpingogram would. Ask your doctor what your options are. Maybe, if nothing else, she could prescribe some Vallium, Percoset, or something like that.

Good luck.... with the procedure AND the results.

Here's a WebMD link about the hysterosalpingogram:
