Solid aerosol - Smoke consists of tiny (microscopic or even smaller) particles of solid suspended in the air. So it is really a two phase system -- solid and gas.It is properly called a solid aerosol.

Solid or liquid in gas dispersions are known as solid or liquid aerosols. They include fumes, smokes, haze, and fog.

The guy at the top has it right, it's a solid aerosol.

Many gasses can be seen. Bromine gas is brown, and Chlorine gas is green. I live south of a chlorine production plant along a river. When they have a leak, you can visibly see a green fog leaving the plant. It's truly scary to see it travel across the ground toward the river where it mixes with the water and becomes harmless.

Smoke belongs to the colloidal state of matter in which the solid particles of dispersed phase are in the dispersion medium(gas).

not all gases can't be seen, for example, bromine gas is brown in colour...
but i don't think smoke is a gas becouse it seems contain of tiny solid particles..

The thing is, I think smoke is made of several different things, so you would need to know their states of matter.

By the way, fog is water vapor, considered a gas, and you can definitely see it.

it would be a mixture of gas and solid (although the solid would be very fine ash)
