You want the spoon rest in the middle but facing down so if there is stuff on the stove it is easy to get to the handle of the spoon without burning your self.

Place the spoon rest on the stove with the handle facing the front of the stove..If you place it towards the back of the stove you would have to reach over everything to put the spoon in the rest. It would be awkward and dangerous.

I place the spoon rest face out because the spoon handle will lay on the narrow part of the spoon rest resulting in the spoon handle facing me. That way the spoon handle will be easy to pick up.
