Either call Schnucks or ask someone there to find out for you what their policy is on handling reference checks. Many companies nowadays will only verify employment dates and won't give an opinion on a person's performance or the reason for separation of employment (so as to protect themselves from lawsuits). So you might be safe.
Regardless, they are going to ask you why you aren't there anymore. You can tell them whatever you want but remember that lying on an application/in an interview is grounds for dismissal - even if they don't find out about it for a couple years.
If I were you, I would do whatever it takes to get the Kroger's job - but only if you are determined to then get your act together and be a better than average employee for them.

you do not say how old you are, or if you have had jobs previous to the store job that you got fired from...........if you are 18 or younger.....I would not list my previous employer..some kids don't really start to look for employment until they are out of highschool.........but, if you are in your twenties, the employer that you are trying to get a job from will wonder why you have not secured a job thus far.....
by the way...........you can check...."do not contact previous employer" on most applications..........and write your former employer down.............I would not leave too big a gap in between employment either.....if you are over 18 write it down, if under, and it's your first job, just tell the employer that you wanted to devote all of your time to your studies
above all......I hope you have decided to take your next job more seriously.....get to work and do a damn good job this time!

They are going to wonder about your gap in employment if you don't list it. I would list it and work on what you will say at the interview about your previous employment. They may call the other company, but most companies are now restricted in what they will say because they don't want to take the chance of having a lawsuit filed against them. When I call for references - I generally just get the dates of employment, salary and job title - even though I have four pages of questions to ask...

If omitting the job in question creates an "employment gap" you'll end up creating suspicion. Your previous employer will probably not reveal the circumstances of your dismissal because it could open them up to a lawsuit unless law enforcement became involved (theft of property for example). They will probably confirm your time of employment and nothing else.

If you ended in bad terms with your previous employer, I would suggest NOT putting your previous employer's contact information. You would be stabbing yourself in the foot if you do and the employers come in contact. You only have to state your previous employer to show that you have experience.

that's easy!!
tell them that you still work at the store you got fired from and put the employment date as whenever you started to "present"
most companies will not contact your current employer because they understand that it may jeopardize your job there.
and then when they ask why you want to leave, make up something good.
now you are creating a small web of lies so if you aren't as skilled at mastering it as many other people have become, you should just tell the truth...can't say i didn't warn ya.

if u were fired, i would NOT put it on ur resume because they WILL call for a reference
if u were still working there, i would not put the name on ur resume and simply put "current employer", especially if they do not know u are looking

yOU APPLY FOR EMPLOYMENT....
DON'T YOU THINK THAT EMPLOYER CAN FIND OUT WHO YOU WORKED FOR?
IF YOU REPORTED INCOME TO IRS/STATE?
ITS ON RECORD.
BETTER TO BE STRAIGHT FROM BEGINNING OR THEY WILL KNOW YOU ARE NOT A TRUTHFUL PERSON.
WHY HIRE A PERSON WHO LIES EVEN BEFORE GETTING HIRED?
YOU CAN LIST IT OR LEAVE IT OFF.....
BUT YOU WEAVE A TANGLE WEB TO DECEIVE.....
POOR JOB PERFORMANCE?
TO NOT BEING TRUTHFUL....?
MAKES A PACKAGE I WOULD NOT HIRE.
