I'm thinking about signing up for The Literary Guild and I wondered if you really save money or is it a ripoff?

They get you on the shipping charges. The books are also generally "book club" editions on cheaper paper with rough edges. You also have to send back those return cards or they send you a book you didn't ask for.

You can actually do better on line from Amazon or wait a year or so and get it from a close out book place. You can find mint publisher store editions for $3.95 if you wait long enough.

I do not believe you will save any money in The Literary Guild. You will save more with bookstore coupons or ordering via Amazon. On the other hand, TLG will send you interesting info on new books, so that's nice. I'm a member of Quality Paperback Bookclub and will occasionally buy from them, but I always enjoy their magazine.

I would guess so, If you like the sort of things Literary Guild carries. It's a very very convenient way to get books if you're busy, or can't get to a bookstore, or there are no bookstores where you live. Be sure to return your "choices" notice on time if you don't want a book each month, though.

I've heard that half.com has very good prices on books. I belong to a book club locally and don't always buy the book unless it's a good one, then I look for it at a trade in bookstore or another place that sells them at 70% off (overstocks). Sorry, but in my experience barnes and noble.com is usually a ripoff.

Barnes and Noble has a membership. You buy it, then you get %'s off of books you buy. Seems worth it to me if you read a lot.
