One of my 6th graders asked this, after doing a lesson on acids and bases. I didn't know, so I thought I would ask. She says that because chocolate is slippery when wet and can taste bitter, she says it is a base. Is she right?

The 6th grader is correct. Chocolate is alkaline. most alkali are slippery to the touch and taste bitter. (Acid are just wet feeling and taste sour.)

The only thing to add here is that chocolate is a mixture of many components. Some are so small that they cannot be detected. That's why there are so many qualities of chocolate you can buy, and why synthetic chocolate is a poor substitute for the treal thing.

depending on the type it would vary.
