I have actually both been an employee within the Canadian health care system and a user of it. The fact of the matter is that if you are going to show up to the ER for a cold yes you are going to wait, and you are going to wait a long time. Health care works on a priority basis the most urgent cases are seen and dealt with first.
I have never had to wait to go see a doctor, my family doctor will usually work me in same day, or I can go to a walk in clinic and wait a half hour to see a doctor. I don't see that as unreasonable.
In Canada you are more inclined to seek preventative care. It costs us nothing to go to the doctor to discuss an health concerns and to take proper precautions to prevent a major break down in health.
I am sure that everybody can agree the best medicine is prevention. You cannot put a price on that.

The reason Canada has universal health care (it isn't FREE), is because we pay a hefty income tax to subsidize a government limited minimum health care.
Both Canadian and US health care systems have positives and negatives. Yes, I know of many Canadians who if seriously ill will travel to the US and pay for the treatment to avoid the long waiting lists in Canada (and yes, they are much longer then the US waiting lists). This hurts the Canadian system as it takes away medical professionals to the US (with only recently the number of doctors leaving Canada to the US and those coming in balanced for an immigration year), and takes money out of our economy. I also know that the top Canadian health care plans (our second tier to cover what the government doesn't) are no match for many of the US health care plans.
Also, in Canada, not everyone is equal in the health care lines. Politicians, armed forces personel, police and fire, and federal prisoners all get front of the line status. I can understand the military and poilce/fire, but politicians and criminals??
Finally, you could also be like the 10% of Canadians (3 million) who can not find a primary care physician and have to go to the emergency room for everything, causing long back ups (6 hours for a broken wrist for me). That 10% is a similar number to Americans who do not have a form of health care, except that 30 million is a lot larger number of people.
So, personally, if I had the option, I would opt out of Canada's high cost health care system and take that tax money to the US to guarantee myself quick service.

The US is just as bad.. My mom hurt her back and needed surgery.. It was 3 months before she got an appointment and then another 2 before she could get the surgery.. I try to get into see my doctor, and it's 6-8 weeks for an appt.. I either have to go to ER or see the RNP (which usually takes a couple of days).. The sad thing is internationals over here can see a md before us and get treated better than us.. (sit in the ER here some night and watch).

Because we do have free health care. We don't have to pay a bill when we go into the hospital because it is paid for through taxes.

I've talked to alot of Canadians about this, and I've never heard of anyone waiting any longer than like 30 minutes to reach a doctor. Frankly, they wait the same time as I do at private doctor's office, so time doesn't matter. They pay higher taxes, but who the hell cares? The small amount more they have to pay supplies them with more than the average American gets -- and they get it for life.

It's poor rumours like this that fuel the argument for the government to not bother with managing health care for all.
The Canadain waiting lines are not any longer than the waiting lines in the US.

That is the most dumbest thing I ever heard ! you obviusly are not Canadian ! First of all health care comes out of our taxes. From what I heard in the states if you can't afford it you die on the floors...Wow your that jealous of our health care
Most people prefer canada due to the quality of life here compare to the states. I know alot of Americans who moved here because of that .
Many Americans come to Canada to get our Helath care...only idiots would listen to what your saying as your mumbling nonsence with no facts
Social issues , dirty cities ...and trailer homes is a common living accomodation in the states

It's the other way around. US citizens come to Canada. Our health care system might slip into two systems, and that is causing the long waiting times.
