Every myth hs a starting point. That starting point, however, is not in the existence of anything quite like dragons and elves, even though there are some things (maybe dinosaurs, or dwarfs, that may look to us something like dragons or elves.)
The starting point for myths is the need to understand significant events in our lives and in the world around us.
Some people, for example, have extraordinary power and presence -- where does that come from? Well, it explains something to say they were 'touched by the gods" -- because they really do seem to have some powers that can't be explained by their education, intelligence, or physical prowess.
So myths built up a story-like world that is emotionally satisfying and contains some deep truths.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. There used to be fairies, dragons, and other mythical beings, but they've all been killed off or maybe disappeared into another plane of existence.

People used myth to explain things they could not explain. Like if they had a flu or something a little elf did it.

There are spiritual beings, though.
