I'm sure I'm a racist for using common sense but I think it's idiotic to live in a danger zone when the country is as enormous as this one is. In my defense I say the same thing when the houses of millionaires go under water in the Hamptons and Malibu.
It wold be cheaper for the federal government to buy up all the land and provide free houses above sea-level for all the residents. Make it a federal park and let New Orleans and the river return to its natural state which would benefit the whole region and the world. Otherwise, wait thirty years for more storms. It's going to cost more than the whole war on terror to put the city back together next time.

I understand that people live where they feel at home. That does not, however, give them the right to expect the rest of us to bail them out each time the inevitable happens. If I decide to build a house on an active volcano that erupts every ten years why should the US taxpayer be expected, every ten years, to rebuild my house, give me temporary housing during construction, hand me a debit card for furnishings, while I refuse to listen to warnings and shoot at the people trying to save me? If the people of New Orlean can do it then so should the millionaires in Malibu and the Hamptons be able to do it. And you can foot the bill.

Well this is coming from a Louisiana girl who only lives 25 minutes away from New Orleans, so i may be a little bi-est.

People who live in New Orleans even after Katrina know that there will most likely be another one however life is a risk. Just because you get in a car wreck does that mean you will never drive again? NO! You move on with your life and hope for the best.

New Orleans is not only a HOME to a lot of people but it a Beautiful city will lots of history. History that can not be erased by some Hurricane. Not to mention a lot of our hearts are here in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

And Hurricane or not HOME IS WERE THE HEART IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO SAINTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The city's geography is just as varied as any other city. Certain parts of the city are well above sealevel while others, predominantly developed in the 1950's are below.

The city sits more than 150 miles upriver from the mouth of the Mississippi. The river is developed from Baton Rouge 250 miles upriver to about 40 miles downriver from New Orleans. These areas support trade for the greater part of the United States, including almost every farmer, concrete plant, power plant, and other industry in the Mississippi/Ohio/Missouri River Valley. Deepsea vessels cannot go any further than Baton Rouge and this corridor is the third largest port in the world and largest in the United States.

We are tied to this area and the cost of protecting it will remain, regardless of whether New Orleans remains there or if its remaining one million residents are relocated. Levees will need to be built and maintained in the area, so we may as well be nice and protect the city while we are at it.

Basically, New Orleans is more than 30 miles from the coast and is easily protected from tidal surges in comparison to any truly coastal city. Politicians, state and federal, just need the backbone to protect its citizens, rather than just corporate property. Yes, another Katrina is inevitable, but the government's failure to protect its citizens from a Katrina is not. And, no, those levees should never have failed.

So, why do people live in New Orleans? Well, I say, why shouldn't they? It's a great place to live.

But the parties are so great there...if you've never been to the Party at the Big Easy, then you just don't understand why people need to build a city under sea level.

Just like you. If you have a choice to live anywhere else, you probably want to stay where you at. No matter what because it home to you. Same as these people, New Orleans is home to them. The place that they are grew a custom to.

Becasue they are proud of their heritage and culture. However, with the threat of being underwater in the near future and all the murders that have taken place this year, if i were a resident, i would be moving out.

That's just where they've been for so long they don't know where else to go. It's a whole city there ya know, not just a few fools wandering around in fields.

Why do you live where you live? I, personally, wouldn't want to live there but to each his/her own.
