It depends on the situation. In my opinion, you should always check your answers even after a long, grueling exam, if you have time. But your first priority is to finish the exam. If you did the problems wrong, you won't be able to correct them because in your mind, you did them correctly and can't see the error. But there are many situations where a minus sign is overlooked or you added incorrectly or you forgot to include a variable, etc. Those are the things you should relax at the end of an exam and check for, even if you are the last person sitting in the room with the instructor. It is worth it. It can make a difference, bumping your score up one letter grade. If it's a matter of homework, you should always check your answers because you do have the time. Your speed at checking your answers will get better, too, the more you do it. And be aware that there are two ways to check answers. One is just to make sure your work is what you intended and is accurate. The other is to undo whatever you did and check it that way - this is the most important and most time-consuming type of checking. For example, if it is an expression that you factored, mulitply the factors to make sure you get the expression. If it is multiplication, do the division to make sure you get what you multiplied, add to make sure you get what you subtracted, etc. This is a way to catch mistakes. If you come up for a value for y, for example, and you think you did the problem correctly, substitute the value for y in the original expression and see if it makes the equation a true statement. If not, it doesn't matter how perfectly you worked the problem; the answer is still wrong.

You are doing the right thing because checking is good.
Bring at least two pens/pencils with good erasers, calculator with enough batteries and any other resources that your instructor allows you to.
Bring a watch to the test with you so that you can better pace yourself.
Keep a positive attitude throughout the whole test and try to stay relaxed, if you start to feel nervous take a few deep breaths to relax.
Keep your eyes on your own paper, you don't want to appear to be cheating and cause unnecessary trouble for yourself.
When you first receive your test, do a quick survey of the entire test so that you know how to efficiently budget your time.
Do the easiest problems first; don't stay on a problem that you are stuck on especially when time is a factor.
Do the problems that have the greatest point values first.
Don't rush but pace yourself, read the entire question and look for keywords.
Ask the instructor for clarification if you don't understand what they are asking for on the test.
Write legibly, if the grader can't read what you wrote they'll most likely mark it wrong.
Always read the whole question carefully, don't make assumptions about what the question might be.
If you don't know an answer skip it, go on with the rest of the test and come back to it later, maybe on another part of the test there'll be something that will help you out with that question.
Don't worry if others finish before you; focus on the test in front of you.
When you are finished, if you have time left look over your test, make sure that you have answered all the questions, only change an answer if you misread or misinterpreted the question because the first answer that you put is usually the correct one. Watch out for careless mistakes and proofread your essay and/or short answer questions.
Double check to make sure that you put your first and last name on the test.

Always check your answers. In fact, the way you are going about it is great. You are doing a few, checking to make sure you did it right and then moving on. If you wait until you finish the assignment before checking you may have to redo the whole thing if you did it wrong. On the other hand, if you check every few problems, you will only have to fix two or three.

If you check your answers after every little step it can slow you down, so even though people will tell you its good to be careful, it can become a problem. If you don't double check at all, mistakes creep into your work. But there is a such thing as checking too often. You have to weigh the relative importance of speed versus accuracy, because its a balancing act and you have to determine what the right balance is for the work you're doing.

Coming from a math teacher...it is always a good idea to check your answers. Before checking the correct answers in the book (if provided) do a self check, then check the provided answers. You should wait until you have completed all problems so that you don't see the rest of the answers before you do the problems.
Good Luck!

Yes, it is good to check your answers. It's not a bad habit to check your answers after doing them. I do that all the time with my math homework.

It is a good idea to check ur work. How else are supposed to be sure it is right? Check ur answers on a test only after you have finished or else you could run out of time before ur done.

well it depends solemly on how much time you have on it. if it is a test and there are 100 questions you have to complete in 5 minutes, then it is a bad idea since you will not have enough time.
however, if you have almost a whole night to complete the questions, (example: there are 20 questions on a sheet and it if due tomorrow), it is highly recommended that you keep using this stragety.
make sure you DONT cheat. lets say if the page says: "add without a calculator", then do what the tittle says. dont use a calculator to check your work if the worksheet says not to use a calculator.
i hope this helped
