I usually do because I remember my days as a cashier and you have to put up with so many *******.I try to be nice and if at the food store always bag my own groceries (which should be a law).

I try. I use to me a cashier for 15 years..It makes the day go by faster when you are dealing with so many people all day long and soemetimes it makes easier to help the customer next time they come in.

I had a "friend" at my grocery store, we chatted so much that when I started coming in at a diferent time she knew I changed shifts. I would say we talked too much for a customer/cashier relationship.

Why do you do this. People behind you are waiting to get served and your chatting to the cashier. You probably get the the cashier fumble through your handbag to find your credit card instead of cash have a little chat whilst the line gets longer.
Please do not do this.

Sometimes, depends on the cashier, like you say, if they are for it. I dont do it when ppl are behind me though because I hate when I have to wait forpeople in front of me to continue their conversation about cat food before the cashier can check me out so I dont want to make ppl wait for me.

If they initiate conversation. If it's some surly schoolkid that looks like they'd rather be anywhere but working, I don't bother. On a side note, my boyfriend started talking to a kid behind the register a couple of days ago, it was not long before closing time and he said "so you'll be finishing soon", or something to that effect and the poor kid looked scared. I think he thought we were going to be waiting for him out the back or something.

I make them talk to me so that they can't talk to the other cashiers and/or the bag boys. So rude when they talk to the bagger and never even say hello to the customer.

I try to be polite and say "Hello...How are you doing?" Beyond that, I really don't talk too much with them. I may make a comment about the weather if it is REALLY bad, or if their store is REALLY busy - but I don't just try to create conversation.

But, what I'm always careful to NOT do, is to call them by the name on their nametag. When I worked retail, I hated wearing a nametag because people always felt they could call me by my name like they knew me. It irritated me soooo much, that I'd switch name tags with other co-workers.
