Believe me, the baby doesn't care one bit. Never will. If a parent has a HUGE first birthday party, it's for the parent.
I wouldn't knock yourself out. No 1 yr old is going to enjoy anything much beyond eating and able to look at ppl, maybe crawl/walk around safely.
A nice thing at home with tons of appetizers and a cool cake is exactly what any 1 yr old needs.

I have never been one to spend a whole lot on birthday parties. But I have an idea on some things to get for a 1 year old. Since the baby is only one, he won't remember this day, so do something so that years later, his or her first birthday is still with them. Why not put together a "treasure chest", Put a NY times news paper with the date on it, take pics of a specific place, that you can go back to years later and see the change, or plant a tree, and take a pic, so when they are 10 they can see the growth. Put some memorabilia in the chest of things that took place during his or her first year of life. I wish I had thought of these about 24 years ago. This could be alot of fun!! What ever you choose, I hope they have a great day, filled with love and family.

Under the age of about 4 or 5 years old, birthday parties are more for the parents, not the children. Do what you feel like. If you feel like having only a few people over for cake, that's fine. If you want the big blowout for 100 people, go for it. Just remember, your child isn't going to care, and will probably get overwhelmed and cranky by too many people and too much activity.

An one year old child is not going to remember anything. However, if you want to go all out, take the child to the zoo or to to the circus. Video if you can and then have an immediate birthday party when you get home. If you do not have a video camera, take pictures with a regular camera.

For our first son's first birthday we just had extended family over for cake and ice cream. Your baby is probably too young to enjoy or remember anything different. Also if the baby gets too tired during the party you can just pop him/her in the crib. I wouldn't spend more than 100 dollars on a first birthday party.

My daugher loves ice cream - so we had a make your own sundae party for her first birthday. It worked well for the kids we invited (they also played pin the cherry on the ice cream cone) and the many adults that were there enjoyed the sundaes too.
