I have tried them all and always come back to my Vox AC30. I have been playing for over 20 years professionally and for serious hobby. In the end, it all comes down to what YOU like. If the Crate or Peavey sound makes you feel good, there you go, otherwise you may be in for a long search for the sound that grabs you and one you can make your own. Good luck!

Being a musician myself I know how it feels to be screwed over by my 'good local music store'. The best deals you will find anywhere is at MusiciansFriend.com(1-800-776-5173). If you see a price lower on any musical equiptment they will match or beat it.
Unlike guitars, you get what you pay for when buying a guitar amplifier. I don't know what style you play but I would suggest if you are playing for live audiences with a band you should pop over a couple extra dollars and buy a TUBE amp. With Marshall amps you are paying more for the name. If you are looking for a lot of power onstage I would suggest a Crate GT1200H/G412SL Half Stack. This is a lot of amp for the money with about very effect possible. If you are just starting to play guitar, you should start out with something smaller that sounds good and can be plugged into the band's PA system when your playing gigs. If you're looking for quality, the Fender small amps are the best for the money. Then Crate. And finally I've heard that Behringer guitar amps, through previews I've read, put out a lot of good power plus ample effects.Keep Rocking!
