Turn on a night light, a low radio for background noise and quietly close the door.

All these ideas are good so for, just put something in the room soothing, some people use those things that play music and shine lights on the ceiling and it works, if your baby is a cryer it is hard, just reasure him her by cuddling and playing a bit then walk out of the room, if your baby keeps crying keep going in about every fifteen minutes and say something soothing but do not touch baby or kiss because this will stimulate him her. Just say something sofe and soothing. The first couple of days will be touch but then they will develope a routine, my son was a cryer and did not sooth easily with music and cuddlies, this in a couple of days did work. I admit the crying is nerve racking and makes you want to cry with them, but I promise it will get better, and you will be happy when your child establishes that routine.

Have a definite routine that you follow every nite including a particular time. For a six month old, he will need at least 12 hours of solid sleep so 7pm is a good time to place him in his crib. This gives you a bit of time in the evening to spend with your husband and time to clean up the dinner dishes. You can sit and rock him just a few min. and sing a nice calm song, in a semi dark room. Just remember that whatever you choose to do, that it only takes 3 times to create a habit and 3 times to break one. So only do what you are willing to do till baby is 18 years old! :) I rocked my last 2 and all 12 foster newborns for 2 minutes and then laid them down in a quiet room and completely dark room. I never had a bit of trouble with any of them (except for the first 3 nites.) My own children are grown now and still sleep like babies! :) LOL diannatriplett@yahoo.com

Put the baby down when he/she is very tired, but still awake. I have that fisher price aquarium that plays really pretty music. I also started giving my baby a stuffed baby bunny when she was 7 months old, so she did not feel alone in her crib. She goes right to bed without fussing and stays there, even if she wakes up.

We were having trouble getting our 5 month old to go to sleep on her own. The first thing we did was establish a routine, but she still cried when we put her down awake. Some one suggested that we let her "cry it out." She swore it would only take 30 minutes the first night and would decrease after that. This sounded like torture to me and my husband but one night (at our wits end) we went through our routine, kissed her goodnight, and put her down. It took her 29 minutes to stop crying but it worked. Night two took 20 minutes, night 3 took 10. Since then we have had no problems getting her to sleep (at night or at nap time) and she is now 16 months old. I think trying this early (before baby is extremely mobile) is the key to making this work. If she were able to stand I don't think we would have been able to pull it off as easily.

If you can, have a recording of your voice, so that your baby can hear it. The sound of your voice may make the baby fall asleep. Better still if you have a good singing that is even better.

I have been very lucky with my daughter....
She is 7 1/2 months now. we sit together while she has her last bottle of the day and after she takes her last sip she just flops back and turns her head.
after that we just put her in her crib and she goes to sleep!! I cant keep her up past 8 if i wanted to.
