My wife is young, attractive and a bit naive. She insists on walking around late at night near our apartment (near the University of Pennsylvania). Last night a guy was shot just a couple blocks from here. Am I wrong to tell her she should not be walking around by herself at 10:00pm? Am I being over-protective and paranoid?

No intelligent woman walks alone at night period!! I love Philadelphia, but I am always really cautious. I was chased by a man when I was a teenager in a small town outside of the Poconos. The fear of that encounter never left me. I'm so grateful that I wasn't hurt or worse. Tell her to use her brain....I don't mean that as an insult. She needs to be smart to stay safe.

Walk with her. Remember Philly has had at least 14 murders as of 1/10/07....I just saw the news...it's 24 not 14

I'm going to be honest. Parts of Phili are nice, others are dangerous. The area I think you are talking about is not the safest area in Phili. If I were you, I would not let my wife walk around alone at night. Just don't be out and about at night, get what you need to get done during the day. I can tell you really love your wife, and that you just want what is best for her.

You are being the perfect husband. Philly is not safe in the day time. I can imagine what goes on at night. Although it is a thriving city, the job market is good. But the gun violence is so sad. I hope your wife starts to listen. I am a female and had to learn the same thing.

You are not being paranoid, you love your wife!
Any big, populated city is dangerous at night.
I am sure she will be fine, but I wouldn't want anyone i cared for walking the streets of a big city at night. Maybe you, or someone can accompany her.

HELL YEAH!!! Philly is dangerous in the day time let alone at night. Has your wife read the paper or watched the news lately? There have been more murders here this year (2007) than there has been days in this year. Lock her butt in the house!

walk with her then. i live in philly, but i'm in the far northeast, so it's a different story. up here, you can walk whenever you want, it's so quiet compared to the real city. also, it's hard to believe that any city woman is so naïve that she shouldn't be ok - if she's been doin that for so long, it's obvious that she's been ok. where she's going is another story.
