Who do you know? Seriously. That's the best way to get into this business. Otherwise, you gotta be here in Hollywood. Let's start with that. Then watch Craigslist everyday. That's a good place to look for short term work. Get out and talk to people in the business. Talk about pounding the pavement. This isn't a permanent job sort of thing, you know. You'll be unemployed for months on end in between. Maybe you'll hit up a rapport with one of them and they'll ask for you the next time and it could become permanent, or at the very least, a company could like you well enough to ask for you on every shoot.

It don't work like that. You have to get into the Union end as a Production Assistant, part of the Directors Guild. Then you have to network and know people, because you work on a job by job basis. When you work it's 3 - 6 months at maybe $700 a week, then you get laid off and you are on unemployment looking for your next job.
Personal assisants are generally friends of the actors, relatives, maybe it's their chauffer or girl friend.
The Actor negociates them into the deal and they are paid and stay with the actor and get a small screen credit.
Big big actors have many assistants!
It's not easy work either, and you need your own car. It's like being a UPS person. You wear a headset, have a cell phone and do what is asked of you. If the actor wants you to do their grocery shopping, you report into the production manager and then go grocery shopping for the actor.

If you live in NYC or L.A. jobs are sometimes listed in the Sunday help-wanted section. If you know someone working in the entertainment industy, its easier to network.
