Personally I don't like gold gouramis because they can be aggressive toward meek mannered fish. Their tank mates should be equally aggressive or armored like corys. Firemouth cichlids and fast fish like bala sharks, red tailed sharks and clown loaches would also work. mind you, the goldies won't eat your average sized fish but they will nip at them quite a bit. If you want to stay with smaller sized fish you can use danios, barbs, swordtails and larger tetras all these are quick enough to stay out of goldies way.

Maybe some Pearl Gourami might look good, and they should get along OK. A couple of Angelfish would also be compatable. If your water is 7.0 pH or lower some Congo Tetras would make an interesting contrast. There are a bunch of others, too a lot depends on what sort of tap water you have where you live. If the fish are a good match for the water that you can provide most easily then everything gets easier. Good luck. PeeTee

Gold gouramis get aggressive as they get older, and they get pretty big (up to 6"), so they need to be kept with similarly sized aggressive or semi-aggresive fish. They will be aggressive with each other too, but they do much better in groups of 6 or more. With a 55 gallon, you can stock that many as well as some schools of large tetras, giant danios, tiger barbs, loaches, etc. They do okay with catfish and plecos, too.

Docile fish like Silver dollars, a fire eel, tiger barbs and such. Try to avoid gold fish. They tend to dirty the water quickly. Bala sharks would work. Pacus look mean but aren't. Have fun.
