It all started when Rush Limbaugh created a market for people to hate the president (Clinton). As time moved forward the hard right called everyone who did not agree with the Iraq war a coward and a traitor to their country. Ann Coulter solidified this train of thought. Then Bill O'Reilly initiated a boycott of France and the hard right started the saying "freedom fries" because France also did not agree with the war. So I now have no respect for those who support the hard right. Before then I was a 100% independent.

Here's a reason. The divergence of goals by different groups on certain issues will never create an agreement, no matter how much discussion is undertaken.
And people with a lack of intelligence who can't stand losing resort to name-calling when cornered. That's it in a nutshell.

It is easier to insult than to debate.
no one wants facts or truth anymore they want opinion and speculation and that's good enough for them.
if some one disagrees with you then that person is an idiot or ignorant or racist or sexist or what ever.
No one wants to take the time to figure stuff out, they want to go right in to childish behavior because that is what garners attention.
It's the Jerry Springer Effect. Why actually confront problems when you can just insult the person, get popular opinion on your side and you "win"
its a sad time for rational thinkers

Actually, that is based on a false premise.
First of all, only about half of the entire population votes in the US,
So in actuality, 25% of the population are Republican and 25% are Democrat.
_-- But I agree with the statement, that half of the country votes in the same party.
The other half of the country doesn't vote because they gave up hope or are disenfranchised--have a criminal record, or are illegal, and about 3% vote for third parties (the smart ones);)

The recent problem is that people have stopped looking at themselves as Americans first, before their political party.
