Holes - Louis Sachar A boy named Stanly Yelnats is sent to a intense "Character Building camp" after being wrongly accused of stealing a baseball legend's sneakers. At the camp the residents are forced to dig one hole, 5 feet in diameter, 5 feet deep, "To build character". Stanly suspects that there is a purpose for the digging other than discipline. *House of Stairs - William Sleator 5 Orphans are taken to a building that has seemingly nothing but infinite flights of stairs... They are fed by a machine when they perform ever lengthening rituals. This book is a lot better than the summary sounds! *Godless - Pete Hautman A teenager named Jason gets bored in Sunday school and desides to start a religion of his own, worshiping the town's water tower, as a joke. He attracts a few followers, one knows how to climb the water tower so they can swim in it, another becomes serious about the religion. The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin A millionaire dies and his will brings 16 strangers together in a contest for his money. The winner is the one who finds who of the 16 killed the millionaire. Among the Hidden - Margaret Peterson Haddix It becomes illegal for families to have more than two children. Luke is a third child and has always lived his life in hiding until he meets another third child named Jen. *Hatchet - Gary Paulsen A guy named Brian gets stranded in Canadian wilderness. Code Orange - Caroline B. Cooney A teenage Newyorker discovers a old packet of smallpox scabs. Because he inhaled some particals he fears he has been infected and will start an outbreak. The Lightning Theif - Rick Riordan Percy dicovers he is half Greek god and is sent to a summer camp with others of his kind. He goes on a quest to return Zues's stolen lightning bolt. *Life of Pi - Yann Martel Piscine or Pi as he likes to be called, practices Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. After a ship wreck, he becomes stranded on a life boat in the Pacific ocean with a tiger. *Stargirl - by Jerry Spinelli An eccentric, formally home schooled girl begins going to a public highscool. It doesn't sound that special, but trust me, this is a great book. I have given a very similar response to this to a question before. Some of these might me too juvenile, sorry. The ones with a * I highly recommend.

Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so.
And the Police, Every Breath You Take. (stalker song)
I strongly doubt either of these were in the movie but they go with the setting (ok sorta!) and the (very disturbing IMHO) theme of the book.
