youd be amazed how many people live in the southern oregon mountains. the landowners call them (squatters) and there are places here that are truly a campers dream. for about $35 you can get a camping permit for about 4 to 6 months and stay on b.l.m. or federal land and not even the ranger can run you off unless you have comitted a crime on the campsite. thats cheap rent

I have been wanting to do this for many years now and have found that if your willing to go deep into the back country and live sparsely and 100% self reliant you can pull it off. be prepared to have a shelter either in a cave or well hidden from the air though, no cabins in the woods. Washington State's Northern Cascade range has a lot of back country living opportunities . The weather however can be a huge challenge in the winter you have rain and high winds that drop the tempeture below freezing and then depending on your elevation you have moderate to very deep snow. I already have my little piece of heaven picked out. Good luck on what ever you decide to do.

If you are asking whether you can, in the sense of is it possible, yes, certainly.

If you're asking if it's possible to do it without any expenditure of money at all, only if you're tough, and with very little comfort, and plan to live like a caveman. Brush up on your hunting and gathering skills.

If you are asking whether it is legally permissable, you would need the property owner's consent (not likely).

This does not sound like a well-thought-out plan. Talk to Ted Kazcynski, it worked for him.

Yes, in government woods. Just set up a tent. There are lakes also with camp grounds for a very small fee. Just check government listings.
