wouldn't the man try to rectify the situation by repairing the tree with duct tape and then the female would never know it had fallen so he has nothing to be blamed for?

No, because the tree would still fall, and therefore will divert the man's attention from being depressed about the reason that the woman wasn't there, so the man would in fact be right. OOOooo, what now eh???
