Let's assume you're not on drugs...
Did your brain trigger a "funny" that amused you?
Chuckling to oneself is not uncommon. Full-blown laughter may even be called for in some cases. It's just another way people talk to themselves, plants, pets, the tv...
That it isn't a common occurance to you is possibly unusual, or you are really young.
Now if the "funny" is actually triggered by a depressing topic, it could be a symptom of mental disorder. I don't know what to call it other than pathological laughter at traumatic events, something people suffering from schitzophrenia are known to sometimes do.

If you did not smoke, drink, chew or eat some of the usual culprits that trigger this response. Then I would say that you're response was as a result of a joke you once heard, that your brain did not register and you forgot to laugh; until just now.

Do you have ADHD? I have it and it's normal for me. I laugh at random times for no apparent reason a lot. Sonetimes funny ideas, memories, or song bits pop into my head and I can't help but laugh.

When we are overtired sometimes we do that. Or when something we remember comes to mind. Or when the cat tickles your toes with its fluffy tail...
I do it a lot. ( the laughing that is! )
Yes, it is normal, and cute you thought to mention it.
