The long way is to go up to the Tool Bar heading "Format"
Under "Format" click on "Paragraph"
In that menu, the first item is "Alignment"... change the Alignment to "Center" (or Left or Right, depending on what you want to do, play around a little)
The short-cut: If you have some buttons on the third row Tool Bar with lots of horizontal lines, roll over those and one should read "Center"... click it. You should be golden.

I don't use Word, so I can't help there. But with WordPerfect, you open a box, place the picture in the box, then edit the box and then open position, and place the picture at the center of the margins
