If you have a higher version, it may not have the right codecs, or de-codecs. If you have a lower version, i.e. 97, that makes more sense, since Word 97 is not upwardly compatible, but the majority of higher versions are backwardly compatible

If you're using Word 97 and the document you received was created in a newer version of Word (like 2003), then it's possible that the formatting structure in say a Word 2003 doc isn't compatible when viewed in an older version of Word like 97. I know... you'd think they would make it work, but Microsoft doesn't care, as long as everybody upgrades to the latest version of Office they're happy. Ask the person who who sent you the .doc if they can save it as a Word 97 .doc and then resend it.

Just special graphics don't show up or you can't open the word document?
As a last resort when I can't open a word document I open word program, then from the pull down Insert>file
That will convert the word data into your word document.

a) Try installing latest MS Word viewer (using information from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090 for FREE )
b) Those images can be not included in MS Word document - but linked to some location at sender disk. So basically you have received document - but not images.
