What are the Cherries and Coins for in Super Mario 2?

I know the whole story behind Super Mario 2, and how it came about to be so different than the others. For those of you who dont know I suggest you look it up, its a very interesting story. Just do a search for Super Mario 2...

Anyhow what is the point of getting the cheeries, and the coins that you pull up by going through the door via the potion....

Nevermind I figured it out... Coins give you a chance at the slot machine and the cheeries get you the stars.... I guess I will just answer my own question.

the cherries are for the end of that level the slot game the coins are saved for 1up's "100"
