It is up to the parents whether they want it for their son or not.

Why do some babies get circumcised and some don't?

No medical organization in the world recommends infant circumcision, because they say that any potential benefits do not outweigh the risks and side effects of the procedure. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics still supports a parent's choice to circumcise for social or cultural reasons.

First off, some do it for religious reasons. Unless you're Muslim or Jewish, though, your religion does not require it. Circumcision has never ever been part of the Christian tradition (read what Paul has to say on the matter). For 1900 years it never would have crossed a Christian's mind to cut off his child's foreskin, and America is the only predominantly Christian country to circumcise the majority of its babies.

Some parents circumcise because they don't understand that the foreskin is a normal part of a healthy penis, and they fear what they don't understand.

Some parents, as you have read in a previous post, think that the whole penis is vulgar, offensive, or unattractive, and so they take it upon themselves to cut their child's penis to their preferred look.

Then there are the parents who do not circumcise their boys. Some don't do it because they believe that it's too personal a choice to be made by any but the owner of the penis.

Some don't do it because they want their child to have the most gentle entrance into the world possible, and they want to spare their child the pain and suffering that accompany circumcision.

Some don't do it becuse they come from cultures (European or Asian, for example) where everyone has a foreskin and so they know there's nothing wrong with it. So, to them, circumcising a boy seems about as absurd as circumcising a girl.

And finally, there are a few who don't do it because either their insurance doesn't cover it or Medicaid doesn't cover it (seeing how it's not even recommended, let alone necessary), and they just don't want to pay for it out of their own pockets.

I have an intact son and he is perfect. Never had any problems or odor. Leaving him intact was the best decision I ever made.

because there parents are ignorant how to care for a normal penis or they like the look of mutilated penis's or it's forcing religion upon their child.
When your circumcised, especially if your a baby since the penis is still attatched to the foreskin and must be ripped from the head, you lose lots of errogoneous skin. There is no skin on the human body that you can't feel, of course the most errogoneous part of a male's body is no exception.
If and adult man was circumcised it was probably for health reasons, which more then likely could have been avoided but he had an ignorant Dr, so obviously he would think that.
Health complications are rare and when they do occur can more then likely be dealt with using non surgical options but hundred years of circumcising babies leaves alot of ignorant people who dont' know how to care for a normal penis - easily, just like you clean a vagina or any other body part, this practice should be illegal.
It first started in english speaking countries to prevent masturbation in the late 1800's, which was also thought to cause numerous health problems. The ignorance has evolved from there and the good thing is it's becoming less everywhere.
Aid's/std's, you don't need to cut up your dick to keep you from getting it, you practise safe sex and use condoms and know your partner, easy as that and common sense tells you leave baby boys penis's they way there supppose to be.

Parents preference. Fortunately, I never had to decide that because I had two girls, but we did do our homework on it just in case. We chose not to because of the risks involved. The risks are rare but potentially very serious. Many people opt for circumcision because of the hygiene, but short of a bit more time in washing early, it isn't a problem (usually.) This is a subject that should be more readily discussed with your birthing center. Do your homework, and get a couple of doctors or midwife's takes on it.

Firstly, it's "circumcised", with an "s".

Why are some babies left happy, healthy, and whole...while others are cut, without their consent?

1.) Location: America is the only country that still routinely circumcises for non-religious reasons, but even here circumcision rates are declining in every region. The lowest rates are on the westcoast, the highest are in the midwest; nationwide, the rate is approaching 50/50.

2.) Knowledge level of the parents: If you peruse messageboards, blogs, or discuss the issue with other parents in person you will likely hear parents who circumcise providing rationale relating to "matching dad" or fearing locker room teasing. If you ask parents who chose not to circumcise, you're more likely to get an anatomy & physiology lesson, explaining the value and protective, sexual, and immunological functions of the foreskin throughout life; knowledge is power. The more you know, the worse it is.

3.) Medicaid coverage/lack of coverage: Since infant circumcision is not recommended by any medical organization in the world, it's completely elective, cosmetic surgery on a non-consenting minor. Thus, many states are refusing to pay for it.

4.) Jews & Muslims often circumcise for religious reasons.

In an article in last week's Chicago Tribune it said that the East coast is low in circumsizing because many insurance companies are not covering it. For those of you who think the child is sleeping like an angel that is not the case. I will never forget I was visiting my nephews in the nursery and about 20 feet away from me I saw this hospital worker just snip something and the screams from this poor boy still echo in my head.

I believe that parents that cut their sons, just didn't do their research. I have TRIED to find any GOOD evidence that circumcision was good and needed and have yet to get that. I am not a doctor and don't have any reason to distrust every medical organization that circumcision is not needed.
I don't believe in doing something "because everybody else is doing it". If my son lands up having problems with HIS foreskin we will deal with it then, as for now he is doing fine.

Because some parents really don't understand the harm they are doing...and doctors have all that money to make on an easy quick surgery, not to mention the sale of the foreskin to cosmetic companies after the amputation. People really don't realize the amount of money that is made off of their son's genital integrity.

Babies get cut in America mostly because of commercial interests, doctors make money out of cutting them, then they sell the tissue to biotech companies who make money out of the cells. There's a massive industry dependent on raw materials, which cannot be allowed to dry up.

Sadly, parents in the US have bought the line for the last 100 years that their doctors have been feeding them, circumcision has been touted as being a cure for all kinds of things, starting with masturbation and epilepsy, through all kinds of diseases and now the media has started on HIV. It doesn't occur to many to question the medical profession's motives even when their doctor is making a profit out of them - to the tune of $200 for about 15 mins work - and will not give it up because it is what they are used to.

The US is the ONLY country in the world routinely cutting the foreskins off their babies, I suppose the rest of the world should be grateful, as the babies of the US are supplying the rest of the world with alternatives to animal testing and other skin cells and substitutes.

Depending on your religion, a baby can't get circumcised. For example, I am Lutheran so my son when he was born I had him circumcised, not just because of my religion because of my personal choice. However as far as I know, in Islamic and Jewish religions, it is a religious requirement to have your baby circumcised. Also, for both boys and girls, in many Africa countries, it is a religious and social custom for them to be circumcised.

It's a matter of what you were raised to believe. My mom had all three of her boys circumcised because my uncircumcised dad had a problem with infections while overseas in the Korean War. She preached to me from day one that this was better for boys, for health reasons. Now that I'm older, and able to research it for myself, in hindsight, I wouldn't have circumcised my two boys. Sometimes I wonder if it was the right thing to do, but there's nothing I can do to change it now.

All I can say is do a lot of research and soul searching and decide what's best for your little one. Either way is perfectly acceptable. God Bless
