The phrase "Political Correctness" has been bandied about for at least fifteen years, always in a negative context.

What it refers to is the changes in how the media depicts various people. And that has been going on for a long time.

The use of the phrase, however, tries to trivialize these changes by implying that such changes are silly, and influenced by some arbitrary council somewhere.

Many people believe that this "Political Correctness" inhibits free speech, but if there is no central authority, then everyone is doing the inhibiting. Which includes the people who complain about "Political Correctness." I've heard people get discredited for being "too politically correct," which is also inhibiting free speech.

The other problem with the term "Political Correctness" is that we use it to describe almost everything, which means that anything negative can be attached to it. Originally, "Political Correctness" referred to phrases such as "Vertically Challenged" for short people, and "Domestic Hygiene Technician" for house maid. Later, it was supposed to refer to always including an Asian and an African-American in any group, such as the Lost Boys in "Hook." More recently, it was supposed to be the reason we stopped calling people Oriental and started calling them Asian, and stopped calling people Black and began calling them African-American. But all those things were changing before and after "Political Correctness" was supposed to have been the reason for doing those things.

So, I think the term "Political Correctness" is bad, especially when it is used to belittle attempts to be treat people with respect, or claim more dignity for themselves.

I've never been a big fan of political correctness. I figure that if what I think offends you, then you should go somewhere else. I'll try to be diplomatic to a point, but if you're still offended, sux for you....

Anyway- Good points of political correctness- It does encourage diplomacy and sensitivity...

Bad- ... to the point that "offending" becomes a prosecutable behavior. People become afraid of offending, and afraid to stand for anything, express their beliefs or opinions. I think PC interferes with Freedom of Expression more than it needs to.

Consider Michael Richards' comedy routine where he was heckled by a couple of men he called by the "N" word.... I think the club owner should have kicked THEM out, not the performer. (Yes, an apology was appropriate, but I think the Black community has gotten a little carried away with the whole "You offended all Blacks everywhere" thing.)....

I'm not condoning the word, I'm simply saying that the only reason that word is considered "bad" or "not ok" is because a bunch of people who happen to be Black decided they didn't like the word... It's just a word... It only has power because people have given it power.

The bad sides: We all have to alter our wording in moronic ways to prevent the chance that we might just hurt someones feelings. I mean, so what if you feel a little offended because someone doesn't say the exact words you like to hear, that doesn't constitute as a bad day. You know what does make a bad day? Getting hit by a bus!

The good sides: There is no longer any ill-feelings among people who are different than one another, and everyone gets along perfectly well. Wait....

I can see where originally it was a good idea atleast in the work place. People can't just be nice so it was forced upon them.
But...it has gotten way out of hand. Everything must be PC now or it is a world wide issue. It has gone from one extreme to the other. Bad manners with total rights, to faked good manners with no freedom of speech.
People just need to try to be a little nicer when they speak!

It's good that people can't (or shouldn't be) called something they don't want to be called in jobs and schools.

It's bad that people can't always agree on what the politically correct term for any given situation is.

On the good side, we're trying be nice and not hurt anyone's feelings.
On the bad side, people are turning into wimps and can't take the truth.
I hate it when people walk on egg shells because "someone might get offended"
F them!

Good - I no longer feel the need to open doors for ladies, sorry, women
Bad - I don't get the chance to feel like a gentleman
Worse - I can't get a glimpse of their bodies as they pass by

Gives people more and more reasons to be offended. I think it's stupid. People just need to be more laid back and mature. I think most of us can tell if someone is intentionally being rude. To get offended when no offense was meant is just rude. Get over it. I think it's all bad.

It gives the minorities a right to call themselves whatever they like, while the majority should follow the established rules.
