A 29gal is too small for many african cichlids due to their aggressive and territorial behavior (excluding shell dwellers and a few others). Some require larger tanks due to the large size they attain.

If you have mbuna (usually found in the 'assorted african cichlids' tanks at the LFS), a 55gal is considered to be the minimum.

Assuming you have mbuna, they require to be in well sized groups (8+ fish) and in a sex ratio containing one male per several females. These particular fish can get quite violent in small tanks and in small groups. A 29gal will work for a while but chaos may occur after the fish reach 3" and will intensify when they surpass that size.

I noticed you also asked about the bumblee cichlid in a separate question. Hopefully that fish isn't in your 29gal. That particular species is well equipped (temperment-wise and size-wise) to kill of nearly every other cichlid in a 29gal. I wouldn't recommend keeping bumblebee cichlids in anything smaller than a 75gal.

not truly. African cichlids have very certain water criteria and are suitable saved with different African cichlids from the same section. Lake Victoria cichlids, operating example, could in effortless words be saved with Lake Victoria cichlids. you frequently want to apply beaten coral or Eco-finished substrate to get the pH above 8 and the water tremendous difficult. a type of African cichlid buffers are accessible in to assist save the pH sturdy if necessary, yet with a good substrate it frequently remains consistent. Oscars do not do nicely in the kind of water. also, your Oscar should be 3 inches now yet he receives huge. A 55 gallon will be good for a at the same time as, yet you're going to ought to commence questioning interior the 70+ gallon variety lengthy-time period.

A 29 gallon tank is too small for all but the very smallest species of Rift Lake Cichlids. If you want too keep African Cichlids in a 29,get only one of a species. Then only get species that don't resemble one another. Get a good book and read up on fish before you buy them. It will save money and fish in the long run.PeeTee

If you do not research or know what types of african cichlids you bought, its gonna be luck that they get along.Even if you research 1st, and still get a few different types, its gonna be luck if they get along. In a 29g tank, if you only get 1 species(barring shelldwellars), its gonna be luck if they "all" get along. Best bet to get cichlids to "get along", is first have a good sized tank(55g minimum), 2nd buy them all as juvenilles, and 3rd pick compatible species(still might not "all" get along). I recommend browsing cichlidforum.com . Good site for africans. Good luck as they are very rewarding fish, "when" you get it right. The only fish I would suggest for your tank(besides some hard to find Tangs) are 4-5 Labidochromis Caeruleous(aka yellow labs).

You have to keep them well fed...The rule of thumb is 1 fish per gallon..However Keep in mind you need to provide enough oxygen for them to breath if you keep several. And also chilids grow rapildy so you will need a larger tank eventually.. Good luck
