Democritus was the first one credited with the idea of the atom. He proposed that all things were made up of small bits of matter and he called them atoms.

He was discredited and the idea did not catch on because Aristotle was highly regarded, and he did not believe Democritus. It wasn't until the 1870's when Dalton gave us the Atomic theiry that the idea of the atom was brought back into light.
