My sister ask this to me and I don't know how to answer this:

Why is the series called Legend of Zelda if the main character is Link?

I told her it's because Zelda is the princess, but I think of Princess Peach because she is a princess but none of the Mario games are named after her. I need a real answer.

I told her about Zelda being in trouble and Link rescuing her, but she told me that didn't make sense.

Zelda is the princess of course, (Princess Zelda) and rules Hyrule. And in all LOZ games like Mario games, Hyrule is taken over by evil forces, Gannondorf, and etc.

Link, which can be a Islander in WindWaker, or a Cattle hand in Twilight Princess, is just a regular boy. He is actually the chosen one and saves the kingdom.

All it is, is that Zelda is a famous, legendary, princess, gets overthrown and Link saves her. Link can be called different names, while Zeldanever changes her name.

Princess peach is not special at all, she just rules her kingdom, but is even more powerless than Zelda. She is just a descendent of the Royal Mushroom Family.

The Super Mario Bros. (Mario & Luigi) don't play a much different role in their games, but Link's role always changes.

Actually Princess Peach's original name was Princess Toadstool, but anyway....It's called The Legend of Zelda because Zelda is the one that Link has to save (most of the time). Also, I think The Legend of Zelda sounds better than The Legend of Link.

In every game, The princess, Zelda is a direct decendent of the Zelda before her. Then comes this kid, who is an ordinary farm boy, nowhere related to the "Link" before him; as you can change the name on the later games.

The game was originally called legend of zelda because zelda was the damzel in distress

Its being continued to be called that because it started off as a saga (story) told by japanese natives... and all of them involved a girl named zelda who was being saved and a man named link who saved her. thus all games are based on sagas (excluding some for gameboy)

hope it helps

that isn't the main character trust me im lyke obsessed with zelda
link isn't the main character because you can name him differently (except for the first one i think..) and every game is about saving zelda who is the main character
link is one of the main characters but its called zelda because its based off of zelda with no zelda link wouldn't be a hero...
its kinda confusing but it makes sense in a way
(and plus the legend is about zelda not link
link just comes in to save her) (and mario is called mario because he is da main character and i dont think every game is about saving peach)

this is probably hard to understand...... but i hope yew do *sigh*
