this is my third baby, and i've never had problems before. but this time i don't have any insurance and i'm still paying on the lab fees from the first set of blood tests. so i'm wondering if it's something i absolutely have to do or if there might be other ways to tell if diabetes is coming on?

I think you should absolutely have the test. I did not have Gestational Diabetes until my 4th child. I had no unusual symptoms at all, and would not have know except for the testing. It is very important for the health of your child for you to know and be treated for GD if you have it. I'm sure the lab will be willing to work with you on making payments if you need to. It is not enough just to check your blood sugar with a home meter. The testing you will get is much more detailed and tests your tolerance to glucose after different amounts of time has passed.

All tests during pregnancy are completely optional. You need to know the risks and benefits of each test and make a decision from there. Your doctor and others may not be happy with some of your decisions, but as long as you understand everything, and can show your proof to the doctor that you are being reasonable, they HAVE to abide by your wishes.

As far as the gestational diabetes testing, you may want to read the following article written by Henci Goer called "Gestational Diabetes: The Emperor Has No Clothes" It can be found at: http://hencigoer.com/articles/ listed under "Pregnancy Issues."

Please make an informed choice, and choose for reasons you feel are safe and practical, and not for money issues.

Good Luck!

It's important to have it done so that if you do have diabetes, you can be closely monitored. Some women may not have it with one pregnancy, but could with the next. You can refuse the test, but if you do, you could be treated like a diabetic, even if you don't have diabetes. I wanted to refuse mine, but after hearing that I would be treated like a diabetic (regardless of family history), I had the test done. Some signs of diabetes include increased thirst and urination (more than is normal for pregnancy), and sugar in the urine.

Even though it is your third pregnancy...you can still get diabetes. That test is very important for your health and the baby's. I think most doctors would recommend you have it, if they are working with you on the bill...take advantage. You have to ensure a healthy pregnancy for yourself and the baby you are carrying.

The glucose test is VERY important hun. But, you can cheap-skate it.

Much more cost effective way to tell- buy a glucose meter. You know, the types that diabetics use to check their sugar. Talk to your doctor and find out where you can get one, what normal numbers you should be between and so on. Then, just check regularly and report back to your OBGYN or who ever you're working with for your pregnancy.

This test is really important. If you call the company that you are paying for the fees, they will usually work with you or even provide some assistance. Money should be no object when it comes to your health or the health of your baby. Good luck to you.

It's pretty important. Having diabetes during pregnancy will have a huge effect on your baby especially if untreated. Keep in mind that it is common to get diabetes during pregnancy even when you did not have diabetes before.

Glucose test are important. Not every pregnancy is the same. It is possible to develop gestational diabetes even if you did not have it in prior pregnancies.

It is very important. Gestational diabetes can affect you and your child and can come on during any pregnancy. I had it with my second child and not my first. They monitored us both for during my pregnancy and for several months after to make sure there were not problems.
