Dumb idea. The kurds want their own nation, they're not interested in fixing american problems in baghdad. The Kurds have plenty of friendly ties with shiites and iran and have no will to help bush root out Sadr's Mahdi army.
The kurds have said more than a few times they want America out of iraq altogether. If thats coming from our closest allies in the area, we're in deep trouble.

If the Kurds are assigned to patrol only the Shiite neighborhoods in Bagdad ... that would be a good move. They haven't got a grudge against the Shiites and they could be viewed as doing an even handed job. Forget sending them into Sunni or former Bathist neighborhoods ... it would be "pay back time" and only make matters worse.
The Iraqi government is having a very difficult time of convincing its military from outside Bagdad to come into Bagdad and do their job. Imagine an American soldier telling his superior ... "I ain't going "there" ... it's too dangerous"!

If I were a Sunni resident of Baghdad, I'd trust a Kurdish patrol more easily than a local Shiite one. Switch the position of Sunni and Shiite in that sentence, and it still holds. It takes just a bit too much cynicism to say the Iraqi people are incapable of self-governance.
