Multi purpose as in photos, text etc???
We have done very well with the low to mid level
HP printers... They have lasted too long in some
cases where I am ready for a new printer and the old one just keeps going and going...
We also use HP printers at my office and they have all done well.

Best printers tend to be HP, Epson, Sony, Lexmark. Best deals are after Christmas to March.
Check discount stores like Staples, OfficeMax and WalMart for discontinued models. Ink jets are the most cost efficient.

i use lexmark. but for inexpensive it is quantitative value. to pay printer now vs how much is it per a print. i use both of my lexmarks for print,scan,copy and fax. one is networked and the other stand alone. in-law has a hp that does good. have to determine what features you can't live without and go for it.

I have a Canon 4300 brilliant for photos etc, have a look on amazon for good deals
