A background check does not include details of your work history. Typically they only have the information you provide. Legally a former employer cannot give you a bad reference. They can only confirm that you worked there and the dates of employment. However, they are able to say good things about you. If you have had a very bad work experience I would recommend attaching letters of recommendation from other employers or coworkers. I always keep a file of recommendation letters in case I need them. If you have gaps in your work history be sure that you are able to account for them. If you are talking about a legal background check (for bonding or working with children) it will only reflect your legal history. It will show any arrests and convictions that you have. Hope this helps.

a background check is for criminal history. Most employers ask for a work history though... they may check out what you tell them & they may not. If there are things you don't want them to know about you might want to tell them they can't contact your old jobs. Hope this answers your question.

It depends on the company. If they are just trying to find some cheap, minimum wage, teenage help, they usually aren't going to contact previous employers. They may ask why you left in an interview, but that's it. But if it's a serious company, or a higher paying job, then they will do their homework. I was a manager of a store for 3 years, and I always did for my higher paid employees, but never for the lower paid/part time help.
