Trying to connect to internet. How do I simply connect and go?

My friend came over with her laptop and she needed to connect to the internet. I disconnected the line from my desktop so she could plug it into her laptop, but she wasn't online. What did we need to do so that she could be online? Did I need to install something? What steps do I need to take next time so that it will work?

Depending upon your ISP, your pc has the ISP software, her's did not. There can be other reasons, but that is the first that comes to mind.

She probalby needed to reboot the computer or if your connection is encrypted using say WEP, she needs the WEP key configured.
