At work I received an inexpensive purse for doing a good job from my shift managers. While on my break I went shopping inside of the mall where I work.I went inside of a store, not knowing this is where my managers bought the purse, after purchasing a pair of shoes the lady advised me that they sell the same purses here and then accused me of stealing the purse at the store I then advised her that it was a gift from my managers and that if I stold it why would I put it on the counter. She then put my bag of shoes in the back and took me by the arm saying that I was lying and I'm not going anywhere until I showed her the receipt for the purse at the same time she continues to call me a liar. I advised her to call my store and ask my managers if they gave it to me.She kept calling me a liar and a thief and didn't let me leave Ifinally left after one of my mangers came looking for me because of me being late and telling the lady the same thingThe lady was still calling me liar What can I do

If your story is true, you can sue the bejeezus out of the store that stopped you.

Before someone can stop you for shoplifting, there are several legal requirements they must meet:

They must see you enter the department
They must see you take the merchandise
They must see you bypass all points of sale with the merchandise
They must see you leave the store with the merchandise

Sounds like the store you're talking about didn't do any of these.

Get a lawyer and go for it.

Ask your manager for a receipt first. If they have this it will be very easy to sue the store for wrongful imprisonment (they prevented you from leaving), and for slanderous statements.

Even without the receipt. the store can be sued for the same reasons. Generally in most states a retailer is only protected if they actually witness you pickup the item, and you show intent to leave without paying for it. In your case neither of those can be shown, so I'd get a lawyer (most will do it for just a % of what they get for you) to sue the store. They probably won't want to goto court and will offer an out-of-court settlement.

You actually have the basis of a good lawsuit. Especially if the store person took you physically by the arm (assault) and to the back room (unlawful imprisonment/detainment) and if this was in front of witnesses then deflamation of character. You could press crimal charges against the individual, and sue the company they were representing in actions taken that day.

We all make mistakes ... but those of us that are half human ... do it with a degree of respect ... the day of innocence are truly gone ... survey sez .... ARRRRRNT

it is truly sad that in this techno state we live in that people can't be more sure when confronting someone ... the consumer truly takes they dignity , self respect and freedom into a place where these simple fundamentals no longer have any bearing

Gee, I'm not a lawyer...but surely there is something that you could bring charges for. False imprisonment..kidnapping(since she held you against your will),,,,thers is something that has to do with character??? Dang, not sure of that. But I would call a lawyer and just ask what your options are. OR.....call the main office of that store and report her to her bosses. I'm sure they wouldn't be very happy to hear what she did to you.

Whatever you do....good luck!

First, file a complaint with her supervisor. Second, speak with an attorney! You may have a cause of action for False Imprisonment.

if this is all true, you should sue the store. She even accused you of lying after the matter had been resolved. they had no right to harrass you like this. You should have fought her off in self defence.
